driving rehab services
How We Help You Drive Safely
At Stay Steering, we provide specialized driving rehabilitation services for individuals in Indianapolis and surrounding counties experiencing physical or cognitive changes that may affect driving safety.
Our approach focuses on education, hands-on evaluation, and practical solutions—helping clients and their families understand options, make informed decisions, and move forward with confidence.
Driving Rehab Evaluations
Stay Steering Process Details:
- Client must first obtain a referral/order from a physician for the driving evaluation (we can assist with obtaining the referral if needed)
- One the client has obtained the driving evaluation order from their physician, a Stay Steering representative will meet the client at their home for clinical testing including cognition, vision, and an orthopedic assessment (strength, range of motion, pain, reaction time, coordination, etc.)
- We will then get into our company vehicle for a driving evaluation, starting on low traffic streets and familiar routes and working up to busier roads and higher traffic routes if necessary
- Upon the final determination of the client's fitness to drive, the Stay Steering representative will communicate the results and send a report to the client's physician and, in certain circumstances, the BMV
Length of Time
Each driving rehab evaluation typically lasts around three hours, allowing adequate time for both clinical assessment and behind-the-wheel driving without rushing the process.
Nature of the Evaluation
Evaluations include a clinical review of physical, visual, and cognitive abilities, followed by a real-world driving assessment to observe safety, control, and real-time decision-making.
Location
Clinical evaluations are completed in the client's home. Behind-the-wheel evaluations are conducted in a controlled setting using a company vehicle.
Conditions We Evaluate
Specialized assessments tailored to a wide range of physical and cognitive concerns
We work with individuals who experience conditions that may impact driving ability. Each evaluation is customized to the client’s specific condition and functional abilities. By focusing on the individual rather than a diagnosis alone, we ensure that recommendations are thoughtful, accurate, and pertinent to the client's driving needs.
Low Vision
Assess visual acuity, peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity, depth perception, and movements of the eye
Mild Cognitive Decline
Evaluate memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that affect driving safety.
